This past September, the Turtle Lake Public Library applied for the Children’s Book Project grant through the Pilcrow Foundation and was awarded the grant in October. The Pilcrow Foundation is an organization dedicated to providing new, quality, hardcover children’s books to rural public libraries.
The Pilcrow Foundation provides a 2-to-1 match to rural public library grant recipients who contribute $200-$400 through Friends of the Library or other local sponsors. The purchases of the Turtle Lake Public Library grant books – worth over $1,600- was made possible by a $400 sponsorship provided by an anonymous donor. This qualified our Library to receive 64 books from the Pilcrow Foundation geared to ages preschool through junior high.
The Library was also delighted to receive more than $400 in additional math and science books from Mr. Hal Berenson and Mrs. Laura Ackerman of Colorado, 18 other books related to health and wellness by a generous donation from Drs. Bill Strawbridge and Meg Wallhagen of California, along with two books from Shout Mouse Press, whose mission is, “[to]” empower those from marginalized backgrounds to tell their own stories in their own voices and, as published authors, to act as leaders and agents of change.”
Allison Lutz, Library Director at the Turtle Lake Public Library, says, “I focused on selected books that featured diverse characters and stories. I want children to be able to see themselves in books, to be able to relate to the characters they’re reading about; I want them to be excited about reading! I hope that the books that I selected both represent Turtle Lake and help enrich the experiences of Turtle Lake.”
For now, these books can all be found on display throughout the children’s area of the Library. They can be easily identifiable by the specially designed bookplate inside the book crediting the special message the anonymous donor wanted and “Pilcrow Foundation” sticker on the inside cover. Stop by the Library today and check out all our new books!
